About Parque Natural Tajo Internacional

Parque Natural Tajo Internacional covers over 86,000 hectares along the Tagus River, forming one of the most significant transboundary protected areas in the Iberian Peninsula, jointly managed by Spain and Portugal. Geographically, the park encompasses rugged river canyons, steep cliffs, extensive Mediterranean forests, and tranquil riverine environments, with elevations ranging from 150 to over 700 meters. The Tagus River is the park’s lifeblood, carving deep valleys and feeding diverse ecosystems. Ecologically, the park is a biodiversity hotspot, sheltering emblematic species such as the Iberian lynx, Spanish imperial eagle, black stork, and the Eurasian otter. Mediterranean forests of holm oak, cork oak, and wild olive dominate the landscape, supporting a remarkable variety of flora and fauna. Historically, the region holds numerous archaeological sites, traditional villages, and remains of old irrigation systems that reflect the long human presence harmoniously interacting with nature. Key recreation opportunities include hiking, birdwatching, canoeing on the Tagus River, fishing, and wildlife photography. Visitors are drawn to scenic viewpoints overlooking the deep river gorges, especially at locations like Portilla del Tiétar and Aceña de Orión dam area. The park’s tranquil atmosphere and remarkable biodiversity make it a paradise for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts. Seasonal festivals celebrating traditional culture and rural gastronomy add to the visitor appeal. Access is primarily by road through small towns such as Alcántara and Torre de Moncorvo, offering gateways to explore the park. With its combination of rugged natural beauty, rare species, and cultural depth, Parque Natural Tajo Internacional stands as a premier destination for immersive outdoor experiences in southwestern Europe.
